The Enduring Impact of Prayer in Marriage

March 3, 2017 by Tricia Leave a Comment

My previous post, Chronic Illness and Marriage, stirred up quite a bit of emotion in some. The statistic is alarming, that 75% of marriages affected by chronic illness end in divorce.

While it’s a very high statistic, one of my readers remembered a statistic from a study based on the movie Courageous stating couples who pray together have a very low incidence of divorce. So, I looked it up and I knew that you would want to know about this, it’s very encouraging.

In Dr. Phil’s book Relationship Rescue, he references a work of research stating couples who pray daily have a 99.9% chance of staying together.

An interesting statistic shared by David McLaughlin in his wonderful series entitled  The Role of the Man in the Family reflects that the divorce rate in America is at a minimum one out of two marriages. But the reported divorce rate among couples that pray together is about one in ten thousand. Pretty impressive statistic, even if you reduce it a thousand-fold.”

A research project led by Christopher Ellison at the University of Texas, in San Antonio, reported in the Journal of Marriage and Family that when couples prayed together on a daily basis, less than 1% of those couples divorced.

If you’re thinking about all the Christian couples you know who have divorced you need to know that only 4% of Christian couples report praying together on a daily basis. In fact, the reports I read also stated that it matters whether or not a couple has the same belief system, whether they attend church together regularly and whether or not they read their Bibles on a consistent basis.

So while statistics state that 50% of marriages end in divorce and 75% of marriages with chronic illness end in divorce it’s comforting to know that less than 1% of couples who pray together on a daily basis will divorce. That means there is something every couple can do to safeguard their marriage regardless of what comes their way.

If you want to divorce-proof your marriage – develop a consistent prayer life with your spouse because a couple who prays together, stays together!
